As we age, the appearance of our lips changes. Their volume and definition is diminished, and the lips become inverted with lines appearing in the lip region. The corners of the mouth (oral commissures) often become downturned. This contributes to a more aged and weary appearance. Some of us also have naturally thin lips. Being a relatively simple and swift procedure, non-surgical lip augmentation in recent years has become a widely sought-after aesthetic procedure in both women and men.
Using minimally-invasive techniques mastered through training in Harley Street, Dr Joseph uses hyaluronic acid fillers of the finest quality ( Juvéderm range), to improve definition or add volume and youthful prominence to the lips, striving for natural-looking yet striking results.
Hyaluronic acid is a key natural component of youthful skin that is vital in retaining moisture and keeping skin smooth and firm. As we age, the natural production of hyaluronic acid declines, and this manifests as lacklustre skin that appears less firm and saggy. Hyaluronic acid gel in dermal fillers feel soft and natural, and have been used safely in the lip region to enhance the silhouette of the face and to smooth out lines around the mouth. They typically last between 6 to 9 months and are reversible if required. The new Juvéderm Vycross® range has a longer duration of 12 to 18 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What will happen at my consultation?
You will meet with the Joseph & Joseph Medical team and discuss a bespoke treatment plan for you. We will discuss your ideas and expectations, and the known potential benefits and risks of the procedure, ensuring you have a clear understanding and that we can meet your expectations before undertaking any treatment. Any history of recurrent cold sores, diabetes, bleeding disorders and allergies will be explored, as there may be an increased risk of side effects if you are affected by any of these conditions. Consultations, including any treatment, last for approximately 1 hour.
What does the treatment involve?
We will make sure that you are as comfortable and relaxed as possible prior to the treatment. Small amounts of hyaluronic acid are injected either in the vermillion border of the lips to enhance definition, or into the lips to improve volume, just under the superficial layer of skin using a small needle. The treatment itself takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes but can take up to one hour if topical anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand. After the lip augmentation procedure, the lips are firmly massaged with soothing Aloe Vera gel to ensure the filler is evenly distributed.
Will it be obvious that I have had treatment?
There may be a small degree of lip swelling or bruising initially, but this usually subsides within 48 hours. For some, there may be some bruising, swelling or tenderness that lasts up to one week, although this is uncommon. At Joseph & Joseph Medical we strive to achieve the most natural results. We want you to look and feel rejuvenated and fresh, whilst avoiding an unnatural or overdone look.
Is there any downtime or need to take time off work?
Typically there is minimal downtime (less than a day) and our clients can usually return to work immediately (if they so wish!).
Is the treatment painful?
As the needle used is fine and the product used itself contains anaesthetic, any pain that is experienced is minimal to moderate. No sedation is required for these treatments, topical anaesthetic cream is always applied to ensure your comfort as much as possible. If needed, local anaesthetic via a dental block may be administered to significantly numb the lip region if requested. There may be some tenderness experienced in the lips after the procedure is completed, but this should subside over a few hours, and can be helped by applying cool packs to the lip region, arnica cream and painkillers, however aspirin and ibuprofen or other NSAID drugs should be avoided as these can increase the chances of bruising.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
You will typically see immediate results and the treatment usually lasts for 6 to 9 months. The new premium Juvéderm Vycross® range lasts longer for between 12 to 18 months.
